02 — The chair

Three barbers. A hundred years of cutting between them.

Pick a chair or take the next one open. Every one of them trained on the straight razor before they were trusted with a fade.

Sal Ironside
Chair One

Sal Ironside

Founder · since 1996

Hot-towel shaves & classic taper

Opened the shop with one chair and a Koken barber's chair he hauled out of a closed hotel. Still sharpens his own razors on a strop by the window.

Marcus Bell
Chair Two

Marcus Bell

On the chair since 2009

Skin fades & sharp line work

Fastest fade in the shop and the steadiest hand on a guard. Cut his first head at fifteen in his uncle's basement and never looked back.

Theo Vance
Chair Three

Theo Vance

On the chair since 2017

Beard sculpting & gray blending

Came up through a salon, came over for the straight razor. Talks less than the others and finishes a beard like he's signing it.

03 — The shave

The hot-towel shave, the way it's meant to run.

It takes forty-five minutes and you should let it. This is the part nobody rushes — the part you can't get from a cartridge razor over a bathroom sink.

01

Recline & steam

Chair back, first hot towel laid over the face to open the pores and soften the beard. The world goes quiet for a minute.

02

Lather & lay

Warm lather worked in with the badger brush, against the grain and back again, until the whole face is dressed.

03

The straight razor

Two passes with the open blade — with the grain, then across — re-lathered between. Slow, even, no second-guessing.

04

Cold finish

A cold towel to close it all down, then balm worked in by hand. You'll feel the difference walking out the door.

A good shave is the last ten minutes of the day that nobody can take from you.

04 — Hours

We're open when the pole's on.

No booking system, no waitlist app. If the pole is spinning, the door is open and a chair is coming free. Mornings are quiet; Saturday before noon is a wait — bring a coffee.

Last shave of the day goes in the chair 45 minutes before close.

What the regulars say.

4.9 average · 600+ reviews · Corktown's chair since '96

Walked in cold on a Tuesday, no appointment, sat for ten minutes, walked out with the best cut I've had in years. This is what a barbershop is supposed to feel like.
Danny R.First-timer, now a regular
Sal's hot-towel shave is a religious experience. I drive forty minutes past three other shops to sit in that chair every other Friday.
Greg M.Regular since 2016
Took my boy for his first real cut. Theo gave him the booster board and the whole treatment and the kid hasn't stopped talking about it. Class act, all of them.
Andre W.Father of one very proud six-year-old
No app, no membership, no nonsense. Prices on the wall, cash or card, and a fade from Marcus that holds its line for three weeks. I'm not going anywhere else.

07 — Find the shop

Look for the pole on Forge Street.

We're in the old hardware building on the corner of Forge and Bagley, the one with the painted brick and the red-white-blue pole out front. Pull the heavy door, take a ticket off the spike, and grab a seat on the bench.

08 — Before you walk in

The usual questions.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Ironside is a walk-in shop — that's the whole point. Take the next open chair or ask for your barber by name and we'll get you in. If the pole's spinning, we're cutting.

How long is the wait?

Weekday mornings you'll walk straight in. Lunchtime and Saturday before noon you might wait twenty or thirty minutes — there's a bench, coffee on the counter, and the game's usually on.

Can I request a specific barber?

Always. Ask for Sal, Marcus, or Theo at the front and we'll put you in their line. If they're booked solid, the next chair is just as good — they all trained the same way.

Do you cut kids' hair?

We do — twelve and under is the Kid's Cut, same chair and the same care, with a booster board for the little ones. First cuts are on the house with a photo for the wall.

Cash or card?

Both. There's an ATM by the door if you'd rather tip in cash, and the tip jar by the register goes straight to your barber.
